Grand-Cul-de-Sac is a lagoon closed off by a reef. The water inside is shallow and flat, which is why kitesurfers and windsurfers use it and why it works well with small children. It is not the place for waves or for a long open-ocean swim; Flamands and Saline face the open sea and get real swell. If flat, calm water is what you want, this side of the island gives you that. If you picture surf, you would be happier elsewhere, and I would rather say so now.

So this side rewards people who want a base to settle into more than people who want restaurants and movement on the doorstep.
