How private security actually gets arranged for a St Barth villa
Start with the property, not with a bodyguard. Most security requests I get are really about access: who can walk onto the land, who holds a key, and how many people come and go unrecorded. Before hiring anyone, ask the villa manager in writing whether the plot is fenced or open to a path or a beach, whether the alarm works and who receives the signal, who holds keys and codes, and when housekeeping, pool and garden staff arrive. A large part of the exposure disappears right there.
The order matters, and it is the part nobody spells out: villa rules first, then the provider, then the scope in writing, then the booking. Doing it the other way round is how people end up paying for a team the owner will not allow on site. Many rentals require the owner's agreement before anyone who is not a guest stays on the property, so that answer has to come before you commit to a provider.
If you want people on site, vet the people, not the company. Ask for the name of the agent on each shift, whether they live here year-round or fly in for the week, and what languages they speak. Someone flown in does not know the roads, the port, or your villa's staff, on an island this size that local knowledge is most of the job. Ask what liability cover they carry. Get the scope in writing: hours, rotation, overnight or not, driving or not. One person cannot cover a day. Continuous cover means a team, and the villa has to have somewhere for them to be.
On weapons, French law applies here and it is restrictive. Do not rely on what a provider tells you on the phone, ask them to state in writing what their agents are licensed to carry and to do. Hesitation is your answer.
Discretion is not a style preference here. The island is small and everyone recognises everyone; a visible escort draws exactly the attention you were trying to avoid. And the usual leak is not an intruder, it is a photo posted by someone who was already on the property. Ask for confidentiality terms covering everyone who enters, staff included.
Two traps. Book early: the pool of experienced local people is small and gets committed far ahead for the busy weeks. And off-island firms often take a retainer, then subcontract to the same local people you could have reached directly, ask straight out who actually performs the work. Transport is where you are most exposed: arrivals, the port, dinner drop-offs.
I live here all year and answer my own messages, and I work with a local rental management company. I don't publish rates, because this varies too much to price in the abstract; I quote case by case. Tell me the villa, the dates, and what you are actually worried about, and I'll tell you what is realistic and what isn't.
Do I need armed protection for a villa stay in St Barth?
Assume not, and start from the opposite question: what specific risk are you managing? Firearms are governed by French law here and the rules are restrictive, so any provider suggesting otherwise should put their authorisation in writing before you sign anything. Most guests' real concerns, property access, privacy, controlled movement between the villa, the port and dinner, are handled by staffing, routine and discretion rather than by weapons.
Can I bring my own security team from home?
You can bring people, but check two things first. On French territory their powers are whatever any private individual has; a licence or badge from home carries none of the authority it does at home. And the rental contract may cap the number of occupants or forbid extra people staying overnight, so the owner has to agree in advance. In practice the arrangement that works is usually your own person paired with someone local who knows the island.
How far in advance should I arrange it?
Earlier than feels necessary, particularly for the December and January weeks and around the sailing events. The number of experienced people living here year-round is limited, and they are committed well ahead for the busy periods. Off-season it can come together quickly. Either way, confirm the villa's own rules and the owner's agreement before you commit to anyone, because the property's constraints usually decide the shape of the whole arrangement.
